{"id":840,"date":"2013-07-30T19:05:08","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T19:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/?p=840"},"modified":"2013-07-30T19:24:23","modified_gmt":"2013-07-30T19:24:23","slug":"against-the-grain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/against-the-grain\/","title":{"rendered":"Against the grain."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember when that cool new fad came out in middle school and you were all like &#8220;Mommmmm I NEED ABERCROMBIE clothes, everybody is wearing them!!!!&#8221;\u00a0 Then you had the dreaded reply of:\u00a0 &#8220;Oh you do? If everybody was jumping off a building, would you do that too?&#8221;\u00a0 Most middle school kids living through those dreaded years of trying to fit in and make friends would usually reply, &#8220;um, no?&#8221; But in their heads they were thinking- &#8220;If it means I had friends then heck yes I would!&#8221;\u00a0 Man am I glad those years are over.<\/p>\n<p>We all learned at a young age that doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing can be hard, it can be lonely, and\u00a0 sometimes even get you into trouble. \u00a0 More often than not though, it is the better path to take.\u00a0 Think about it.\u00a0 Where do we learn our behavior from?\u00a0 Other people, right?\u00a0 We learn how to talk as babies by observing our parents and siblings and we learned the norms of school by seeing what other kids did.\u00a0 We base our dress on what everyone else looks like, heck we even base our own self perception off other people.\u00a0 We justify almost all our thoughts, behavior and actions off everyone else.\u00a0 Well, what if some of those &#8220;other people&#8221; are wrong?\u00a0 Then what?<\/p>\n<p>The good thing is we all have a moral compass, deep down we know what is the right thing to do, but it is just not always the easiest.<\/p>\n<p>I know I rant too much about our society&#8217;s eating habits, but that is just one example of this.\u00a0 Why not eat all that crap food, if everyone else is doing it, can&#8217;t be that bad, right?\u00a0 If it is all stores are filled with, how terrible could it really be?\u00a0 Wrong, this is why obesity is an epidemic.\u00a0 And even though it is an epidemic, I still get ridiculous &#8220;OMG are you on a diet or something?&#8221; looks from people when I order off the menu or am eating fruits and vegetables instead of potato chips- GASP!!!\u00a0 It is so sad that to the majority of our society, eating fruits and veggies means I am trying to starve myself to be skinny.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, I can bash that friend, co-worker, manager etc. behind his\/her back, it&#8217;s not that big of a deal.\u00a0 Everyone is talking about it.\u00a0 Gossip helps people bond right?\u00a0 If I am the one person who doesn&#8217;t, will they judge me?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/be-the-change.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-844 aligncenter\" alt=\"be the change\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/be-the-change.png\" width=\"290\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/be-the-change.png 362w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/be-the-change-300x288.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh and my personal favorite&#8230;sure, I can put that on my credit card!\u00a0 Everybody else is doing it, buying big houses, expensive clothes,\u00a0 nice cars, you know&#8230;all the important things in life. \u00a0 I mean it IS the American way right?\u00a0 No joke, someone once said to me &#8220;living off credit cards is normal, everybody does it.&#8221;\u00a0 Right&#8230;and you can probably guess this same person blamed everybody else for the state the economy was in too. Thumbs up, dude. \u00a0 I will not even go into how many things are wrong with that kind of thinking.\u00a0 Again, I will just keep enduring the weird looks when people ask why I am being so stingy with my money.\u00a0 The best is when I get the assumption that I am a\u00a0 &#8216;poor broke twenty something&#8217;, barely getting by and then people feel bad for me.\u00a0 Living within your means apparently is not the American way.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have ideas that could change your company, your family or your life?\u00a0 Do you have dreams that are so big and different, they scare the living daylights out of you?<\/p>\n<p>I am not telling you to stop going to work or just run around without any clothes on, let&#8217;s not get crazy.\u00a0 Just take a look at the path you are on.\u00a0 Are you on this path because you decided to follow what somebody told you was right?\u00a0 Are you a sucker to what our society says is normal?\u00a0 Are you on a path that really doesn&#8217;t make you happy, but you just thought it was the way you were supposed to go?\u00a0 There is no shame, we all get caught up sometimes.\u00a0 I am 100%\u00a0 guilty.\u00a0 Going against the grain is really hard, but it is truly what changes the world around us.\u00a0 We have the power to stop bad habits, do big and different things and change our little corner of the universe for the better.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/meadquote.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-845 aligncenter\" alt=\"meadquote\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/meadquote.gif\" width=\"333\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Take the road less traveled.\u00a0 Think about all those heroes you have read about in your history books or the entrepreneurs and business leaders of today. \u00a0 They certainly did not do what everyone else was doing, they took a different path.\u00a0\u00a0 They endured all kinds of judgmental looks and laughter.\u00a0 But they dared to follow their moral compass and their intuition instead of what society told them was &#8220;right&#8221;. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I dare you to do the same, to be different.\u00a0 Who knows, you might even start a revolution \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/quote11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-846 aligncenter\" alt=\"quote1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/quote11.jpg\" width=\"291\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/quote11.jpg 320w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/quote11-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/quote11-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember when that cool new fad came out in middle school and you were all like &#8220;Mommmmm I NEED ABERCROMBIE clothes, everybody is wearing them!!!!&#8221;\u00a0 Then you had the dreaded reply of:\u00a0 &#8220;Oh you do?
