{"id":755,"date":"2013-06-26T21:00:12","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T21:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/?p=755"},"modified":"2013-06-26T21:00:12","modified_gmt":"2013-06-26T21:00:12","slug":"fitness-magazines-rant-alert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/fitness-magazines-rant-alert\/","title":{"rendered":"Fitness magazines: RANT ALERT!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And now for another episode of\u00a0 &#8220;What grinds Jill&#8217;s gears&#8221;!\u00a0 Also known as, things that really piss me off.\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t you so excited?!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t let my bubbly and annoyingly happy personality fool you, I can get pretty ragey for a small person.<\/p>\n<p>So there is a certain fitness\/health magazine that I have been a loyal reader of since I was 13.\u00a0 I even have a huge binder full of recipes, exercises, good articles etc. that I have kept adding too all these years.\u00a0 I have always loved this magazine.\u00a0 Except for the last 2 years, I think I have maybe saved 5 articles total.\u00a0\u00a0 It seems now that it is filled with fads, fluff articles and is loaded with advertisements.\u00a0 In the July Issue I just received yesterday,\u00a0 they had the &#8220;<em>2013 Snack Awards<\/em>&#8221; where they research what good snacks are on the market right now and make a running list of ones they have approved.\u00a0 The qualifications for a good snack in this article are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>200 or fewer calories<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> No high-<a class=\"kLink\" id=\"KonaLink1\" style=\"text-decoration: underline !important; position: static; font-family: inherit !important; font-weight: inherit !important; font-size: inherit !important;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shape.com\/healthy-eating\/diet-tips\/2013-shape-snack-award-winners#\"><span style=\"color: #db1278; font-family: inherit ! important; font-size: inherit ! important; position: static;\"><span class=\"kLink\" style=\"color: #db1278 ! important; font-family: inherit ! important; font-size: inherit ! important; position: relative; border-bottom: 1px solid #db1278; background-color: transparent;\">fructose <\/span><span class=\"kLink\" style=\"color: #db1278 ! important; font-family: inherit ! important; font-size: inherit ! important; position: relative; border-bottom: 1px solid #db1278; background-color: transparent;\">syrup<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 0 grams of trans fats<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> No more than 3.5 grams of saturated fat<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> No more than 400 milligrams of sodium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Okay, this is fine.\u00a0 But what really pisses me off is most of these snacks are PACKAGED AND PROCESSED.\u00a0 I mean really, these are the &#8220;BEST&#8221; snacks?\u00a0 Apparently fresh fruit and veggies are no longer considered good snacks?\u00a0 Or maybe they are too obvious to put in a &#8220;best snacks&#8221; article, I think they at least deserve an honorary mention?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Picture-019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-565 aligncenter\" alt=\"Picture 019\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Picture-019.jpg\" width=\"329\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Picture-019.jpg 1936w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Picture-019-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Picture-019-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Picture-019-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also pisses me off that they give us no ingredient lists on these (yes I know I could look them up individually) but knowing what is IN the food you are putting in your mouth is important enough to share in this kind of article.\u00a0 In the few that I checked out, the ingredient lists are monsters.\u00a0 Just because it says &#8220;all natural&#8221; or &#8220;healthy&#8221; on the label does not mean crap.\u00a0 No really,\u00a0 it is all a marketing ploy.\u00a0 Healthy food is not granola bars and packaged crackers that are under 200 calories.\u00a0 I dare you to eat one serving of these things and be satisfied,\u00a0 DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU.\u00a0 Things like this will almost never fill you up.\u00a0 So then what, oh I will have another serving it won&#8217;t hurt.\u00a0 Then before you know it you have eaten a whole meals worth of calories on crackers, or granola bars.\u00a0 But they are healthy right?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Real food is healthy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Picture-034.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-476 aligncenter\" alt=\"Picture 034\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Picture-034.jpg\" width=\"342\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Picture-034.jpg 1936w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Picture-034-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Picture-034-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.blessedinthemess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Picture-034-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry, I am not going to go all Paleo on you and I will not yell at you for eating bread.\u00a0 But what I will tell you is that if you stick to <strong>CLEAN<\/strong> eating, you will see results.\u00a0 <strong>Food that has less than 6 ingredients in it is considered clean, food that does not have words in the ingredients that you cannot pronounce.<\/strong>\u00a0 I have always been into healthy eating but since I have become a strict clean eater a few years ago ( I allow cheats mind you, I am human)- my skin is clearer, my weight is more stable, I am leaner, my workouts are better and my energy levels have gone through the roof, THROUGH THE ROOF. \u00a0 The proof is in the pudding, friends.\u00a0 Stop getting your snacks in the middle of the grocery store and stick to the outside aisles or go to the Farmer&#8217;s Market for goodness sake.\u00a0 THOSE are where the best things to eat will be.\u00a0 You will be fuller, you will be more satisfied and you will be taking better care of your body.\u00a0 <strong>Don&#8217;t fall into the &#8220;all natural&#8221; packaging, take a look at the ingredients, it is the only part of the package that will speak the truth.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, just because a &#8220;health&#8221; magazine or a package tells you something, does not mean it is so.\u00a0 Common sense= stick to food you prepare yourself.\u00a0 There are of course exceptions here and there.\u00a0 However I must warn you, these are the things that might happen when you become truly serious about clean eating:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You will be the minority.\u00a0 Sad but true.<\/li>\n<li>You will need to order off the menu sometimes and people will think you are ridiculous.<\/li>\n<li>When you go to parties, celebrations, BBQs etc.\u00a0 half the food there will not be healthy for you, if not all.
